Description

Studio portrait of 2219 Private (Pte) John Monk McAskill, 7th Battalion from Jamestown, South Australia wearing civilian clothing. A 29 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 28 March 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62) on 17 June 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action at Lone Pine on 8 August 1915 and evacuated to the Hospital Ship Devanha where he died from his wounds on 10 August. Pte McAskill was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
