The corvette, HMAS Lithgow, left Torokina on 19 August for a rendezvous near the Buin area to pick up an envoy from Lieutenant General M. Kanda on 20 August. A barge flying the white surrender flag approached and was escorted to the corvett by Fairmile motor launches, one of which is in the background. The Japanese barge displaying the surrender flag is shown approaching HMAS Lithgow.
