Description
The crew of HMAS Melbourne practise the safety drill 'Abandon ship' near Barbados. Numerous seamen are in the water; in the centre is a rubber life raft carrying at least 12 men. There are two lighters carrying other sailors. With HMAS Sydney, the Melbourne carried out alternate patrols of the Caribbean (based in Jamaica) and the North Atlantic off Long Island (based at Halifax) between 1915 and 1916, as part of the North American and West Indies Squadron. See EN0435.
