Informal group portrait of six officers from the 23rd Battalion standing near Battalion headquarters behind Lone Pine on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Identified from left to right: 117 Lieutenant Frank Henry Dunn, (later Major (Maj) and killed in action 3 May 1917); Major Matthew Baird; Captain Fergus McIntyre (later Maj); Colonel George Hodges Knox (later awarded CMG); Maj Leslie William Matthews (later awarded DSO); Maj William Brazenor (later Lt Col). Four of the officers are smoking or holding pipes. Note the cross on the horizon.
