MOROTAI, DUTCH NEW GUINEA, 1945-11 -06. ADVANCED HEADQUARTERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES. VX51552 CAPTAIN E. S. DURRANCE, STAFF DUTIES AND NX110964 SERGEANT H. HAYL, FIELD SECURITY, INTERVIEWING THEOSFILUS JOERA A TALAUD ISLANDER FROM THE TALAUD AND SANGILE ISLAND GROUP, DUTCH EAST INDIES. AT GREAT PERSONAL RISK JOERA CONTACTED ALLIED AIRMEN HELD AS PRISONERS OF WAR ON TALAUD AND AT THEIR REQUEST MAINTAINED A DIARY OF JAPANESE ATROCITIES. HE DELIVERED THIS TO THE TALAUD FORCE ON 1945-10-14. AT THE TIME OF THE PHOTOGRAPH BEING TAKEN HE WAS IN MOROTAI WHERE HE WAS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE AT THE ANTICIPATED TRIALS OF JAPANESE CHARGED WITH WAR CRIMES. (PHOTOGRAPHER SSGT R. L. STEWART)
