Nieke, Thailand. c. December 1945. Nieke is approximately 280 kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or 135 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. There were three prisoner of war (POW) camps, Nieke Nieke, Nieke station and Lower Nieke over a distance of seven kilometres. Peter J. Hartog (left) in a clearing talking with a Japanese Colonel who was one of a number who did not wish to return to Japan after the end of the war. The building on the left is the Japanese Headquarters. A Dutchman, Hartog was a member of a scientific expedition at the time, but had worked on the Burma-Thailand railway as a prisoner of war (POW).
