Outdoor portrait of Major Allan Murray Jones, MC DFC Australian Flying Corps (AFC) from Caulfield East, Victoria, Commanding Officer of No 2 Squadron AFC. A 21 year old pharmacist prior to enlisting on 6 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with A Flight, No 1 Squadron, AFC from Melbourne on 16 March 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova. On arrival in Egypt, he joined 17 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and was then promoted to command No 68 Squadron, RFC (No 2 Squadron, AFC) and later No 67 Squadron, RFC (No 1 Squadron, AFC). While serving in the Middle East, he was wounded and decorated for bravery. In December 1917 he proceeded to England and then onto France where he saw further action and was awarded further decorations for bravery. By the end of the war, he had been awarded the Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, and Mentioned in Despatches on three separate occasions. He arrived back in Australia on 16 June 1919.
