Description

Two Australian soldiers sharing a cigarette at Gallipoli. Identified on the left is 1303 Private (Pte) Val (George Valentine) Warrener, 4th Field Ambulance from Melbourne, Victoria. A 22 year old shipping clerk prior to enlisting in the AIF on 8 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with C Section from Fremantle, Western Australia on 30 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ajana. After being wounded in action at Gallipoli he was evacuated to England for medical treatment. Upon recovery, he rejoined the 4th Field Ambulance in France on 29 May 1916. Pte Warrener was killed in action in Belgium on 8 June 1917 and his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave. On the right is 1344 Pte Dennis Hehir also of the 4th Field Ambulance. A 35 year old horse dealer from Freeling, South Australia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 22 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with Pte Warrener. After serving at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, he returned to Australia on 4 February 1919.
