Collection of photographs relating to Allen Steel's service in the Army, 1955-1965. Including Malaya and Vietnam
Description
Three of the first intake of recruits to 1 Special Air Service (1 SAS) Company pose beside the unit's original sign and insignia at Campbell Barracks. The insignia features a parachute with wings and the words 'Special Air Service' beneath, all against a background comprising a chaplet of leaves surmounted by a crown. The three men are wearing the unit's original dark-hued maroon beret and the hat badge of the Royal Australian Infantry, the corps to which 1 SAS Company belonged until 1960. The soldier at right is probably Private Allen Earl Steel of Wauchope, NSW.
