AWM190 - Nominal roll of Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force [Military component only]
Enlistment for the AN&MEF began on 11 August 1914 one day after recruitment for the AIF began. The mission of the AN&MEF was the capture and administration of the German possessions in the southern pacific. Within a month the AN&MEF had taken possession of Rabaul and shortly after the British flag was raised; German resistance ceased shortly thereafter. An Australian presence was maintained until 1921 when the League of Nations confirmed an Australian mandate to govern certain confiscated German colonies in the South Pacific.
Content:
Despite name of series it only contains information relating to the Military component of the expedition, Naval personnel are not listed. Nominal Roll consists of Regimental number, rank, full name, birthplace, place and date of enlistment, date of embarkation. Discharge, termination of appointment, death, transfer details and date are also shown.
Items [1] to [3] of this series contain handwritten annotations which appear to have been made by AWM for unknown purpose. These annotations do not appear on item [4] original nominal roll. Item [4] has cardboard front and back covers that appears to have been added at some point after initial creation of the roll. There is evidence that the roll was bound prior to this date and for some unknown reason was unbound and rehoused into the current cardboard covers. The writing and a palm tree motive on the front cover also appear to have been added at a later date. The palm tree may make reference to the fact the AN&MEF was sometimes referred to as the Tropical Force.
