Studio portrait of four allied prisoner of war (POW) in Germany. Inscribed in handwriting on the face of the image is 'Yours sincerely R. McDonald, Port Augusta, SA.' 18 Corporal (Cpl) Robert McDonald, 32nd Battalion was a 27 year old clerk from Port August, South Australia when he enlisted and embarked for overseas on 18 November 1915 from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong. He was wounded and captured at Fleurbaix, France, on 20 July 1916 and held as a POW in Germany until transferred to Holland for internment on 13 June 1918. After being repatriated to England on 18 November 1918, he was married on 24 May 1919 and returned to Australia with his wife Eleanor on 4 December 1919.
