Group portrait of British and French Crimean War veterans at Millgolen, the Botanic Street ...
Group portrait of British and French Crimean War veterans at Millgolen, the Botanic Street residence of Thomas Miller, Honorary Treasurer of their association. The veterans, who are all residents of Australia, are commemorating the Battle Of Inkerman Jubilee. Back row, left to right: Thomas Miller, Honorary Treasurer; Sergeant (Sgt) W M Mills, 3rd Light Dragoons; J Webster, 2nd Battalion, 1st Royals; Sgt W Henderson, 85th Regiment of Foot; W Isbey, 52nd Regiment of Foot; S Townsend, 3rd Battalion, Prince Consort's Own (PCO) Rifle; W Blyth, Royal Navy; T Moriarty, 9th Hussars, one of the 600 Balaclava Charge; and William Sutherland, Honorary Secretary. Front row: E Rio, French Navy; T Fitzgerald, 57th Regiment of Foot; G Thomas, 57th Regiment of Foot; James Crowe, 97th Regiment of Foot; Mrs Ann Crowe (wife of James Crowe and attendant on the Colonel's wife, 97th Regiment of Foot); T Connor, 50th Regiment of Foot; H or M Guy, Royal Navy; J Hames, Royal Navy; and Sgt G or J Bates, Royal Artillery. During the Crimean War Mrs Crowe accompanied her husband as far as Constantinople where she stayed, with other army wives, at Scutari Barracks. Florence Nightingale ran the Scutari Hospital and newspaper articles indicate that Ann Crowe assisted with the care of sick and wounded soldiers. Thomas Miller took a great interest in the veterans of South Australia. He assisted in organising the Jubilee celebrations, hosted some veterans, and exhibited a collection of Crimean relics and photographs. The veterans presented him with a souvenir roll call. James Crowe's medals are held at the Australian War Memorial.
