Smithsonian writer Paul Raffaele (left) with a member of the Afghan National Police (ANP) special counter narcotics team in Jalalabad. This image was taken a couple of hours before both he and photographer Stephen Dupont were caught in a suicide bombing in Khogyani village. Raffaele suffered severe head injuries and shrapnel wounds. He was transferred from Jalalabad to Bagram air base to receive surgery and was later medevac'd to Dubai for further treatment.
Stephen Dupont, along with journalist Paul Raffaele was travelling with the counter narcotics convoy when it was hit. Dupont suffered superficial wounds and shock from the impact but continued to document the devastation of the bombing before being transferred to the US air base in Jalalabad for treatment.
