Description

Two members of the Afghan National Police (ANP) take cover just outside the Khogyani police barracks as Taliban insurgents open fire. These members of the ANP were part of a counter narcotics convoy travelling to destroy opium poppies when it was hit by a 12 year old suicide bomber in the town of Khogyani. Taliban insurgents who had planned the ambush opened fire on the survivors immediately after the bomb detonated.

This image was taken by photographer Stephen Dupont who, along with journalist Paul Raffaele, was travelling with the counter narcotics convoy when it was hit. Dupont suffered superficial wounds and shock from the impact but continued to document the devastation of the bombing before being transferred to the US air base in Jalalabad for treatment.
