Informal portrait of NX163865 Private (Pte) Ernest Charles Ruckley, 53 Battalion. A grocer prior to enlisting on 5 June 1941, Pte Ruckley served in New Guinea from January 1942-August 1943 before transferring to the 2/6 Battalion. He returned to New Guinea in April 1944. Pte Ruckley was awarded the Military Medal for his courage, calmness and efficiency as the medical orderly to a fighting patrol attempting to capture a village in the Yamal area, New Guinea, on 14 July 1945. He was promoted to Corporal prior to returning to Australia and was discharged on 12 November 1945.
