Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX126714 Private Herbert Henry “Smoky” Dawson, Australian Amenities Service, Entertainment Unit, Borneo and Darwin, 1944-1945.
Collection consists of 24 pencil sketch drawings created by Private Smoky Dawson during his service in Balikpapan, Borneo and Darwin, Northern Territory. Smoky Dawson was an entertainer with the Australian Entertainment Unit, and performed songs and skits to raise the moral of troops. After the war, he became a well-known singer, songwriter, performer, and radio presenter. For his service to country music, Dawson was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (December 1982), and a Member of the Order of Australia (January 1999).
