Studio portrait of 6504 Private (Pte) Sydney Murrell, 12th Battalion. An orchardist from Castle Forbes Bay, Tasmania prior to enlistment, Pte Murrell embarked with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Suffolk on 30 September 1916. Later wounded in action, he remained on duty. Subsequently gassed he was evacuated to England. On rejoining his unit, he was killed in action in France and was buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.
