Mixed collection relating to Lt. Col. Philip William Clifford Stokes (VX47598)
Description
Informal portrait of VX47598 Major (Maj) Philip William Clifford Stokes, 2/3 Australian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, reading a magazine in Palestine. While in the Middle East, Maj Stokes served as the commanding officer of the 8th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery (which was nicknamed "Stokes Travelling Circus"). He led the 8th Battery during the Siege of Tobruk and was mentioned in despatches for his distinguished service in the Middle East. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) on 15 May 1942 and later served in New Guinea. In October 1944, Lt Col Stokes transferred to the reserve list of officers and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (ED) on September 1946.
