Description
Bronze and enamel commemorative badge. A red enamelled crown surmounts a voided fouled anchor surrounded by a wreath. In gold letters in blue enamel across the bottom is 'BRITISH FLEET 1924'.
History / Summary
Badge belonging to Leading Stoker William John Ferris Marks of the Royal Australian Navy. The badge commemorates the visit in 1924 of a Royal Navy fleet comprising of HMS Hood as flagship and the smaller Battlecruiser HMS Repulse as well as four light cruisers and auxiliary ships. The fleets cruise around the world was a public relations journey designed to show the world that the Royal Navy still ruled the worlds oceans, it went for eleven months and stopped off at eight Australian ports.
