Description

Following on from taking down the rigging for the Replenishment at Sea (RAS) drill, setting up shock-mats and preparing for a 'breaking of the chain' drill. Here the anchor cable itself is split so that it can be shackled to a buoy when the ship needs to come alongside a stationary buoy. Leading Seaman Boatswain's Mate (LSBM) John Walter's crew and several young officers are given this experience while the ship is at sea. One of a series of photographs taken aboard HMAS Parramatta by Mal Booth, Head of the Australian War Memorial's Research Centre, as part of the Memorial's Curators in the Field program. This program continues the Memorial's tradition of documenting Australia's experience of war, through observing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and collecting records, photographs, oral histories and objects for the Memorial's National Collection.
