Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) John Raymond Sommerville, 27th Battalion. A clerk from Croydon, SA prior to enlistment, Lt Sommerville embarked with the service number 187 and with the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS) with A Company from Adelaide on HMAT Geelong on 31 May 1915. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and evacuated to Malta suffering from enteric fever. After rejoining his unit he was wounded in action and evacuated to England. Before rejoining his unit he was promoted to Lieutenant and, on 5 November 1916, aged 26, he was killed in action in France, and having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
