Oom paul
Description
Completed by Leslie Ward under his pseudonym 'Drawl', 'Oom Paul' is a caricature of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, better known as Paul Kruger, who was the president of the Transvaal, or South African Republic, from 1883 until 1900. The annexation of the Transvaal by the British in 1877 and the outbreak of the first Boer War in 1880 saw Kruger become known as the leader of the resistance movement towards the British.
Working from a photograph, Ward was able to clearly capture all of Kruger's characteristics, including his large white beard, his black coat, top hat and pipe. This image, published in Vanity Fair on 8th March 1900, was widely utilised as a representation of Kruger during the second Boer War.
