Wedding portrait of Lionel Stephen Dix and Gwendoline (Gwen) Mavis Pauley. Originally from Adelaide, SA, Lionel Dix was appointed to the clerical staff of the New Guinea Administration in 1937. He returned to Adelaide in 1939 to marry Gwen and both returned to New Guinea to live. With the Japanese occupation of New Guinea, Gwen was evacuated back to Australia and Lionel stayed behind. He joined the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (service number NG4047) and transferred to the Second AIF on 21 January 1942, with the rank of Sapper and a new service number NGX504. He was reported as missing believed prisoner of war (POW) following the Japanese occupation of Rabaul. In 1945 it was confirmed he was missing presumed dead on 4 February 1942. On 29 June 1942 Lionel and Gwendoline's daughter Margot Lesley was born in Adelaide.
