Informal portrait of 564 Driver Russell Tasman Smith, 2nd Light Horse Regiment. Driver Smith was born in Tasmania and prior to enlistment in the First World War severed in the Boer War, with 2nd Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen Contingent from 1900 to 1901. On return to Australia he became a miner in NSW. On 23 August 1914 Smith enlisted with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment with service number 564. Smith went on to serve in the Second World War as a Sapper with service number N281370 and returned to Australia on 21 June 1942.
