Description

Australian Defence medical personnel treating a Rwandan child. The child is holding a latex glove that has been blown up and a smiley face has been drawn on it. This image relates to Captain Lewis MacLeod, a senior nursing officer with Australian Medical Support Force (AUSMED). MacLeod was awarded the Nursing Service Cross for his service in Rwanda and the citation reads 'For outstanding devotion and competency in the performance of nursing duties as the Operating Theatre Nursing Officer while serving with the Australian Medical Support Force in Rwanda'. AUSMED's initial task was to provide care to United Nations (UN) troops and UN Assistance Mission employees. AUSMED also assisted the local population, treating gunshot wounds, machete wounds, mine injuries and road trauma cases.
