Studio portrait of 504 Private (Pte) John Henry Costa, 13th Machine Gun Company posed as if firing a Vickers Maxim .303 machine-gun. The gun is displayed with ammunition belt and box and a handful of "spent" cartridges have been arranged near the operator's feet. A motor mechanic from East Brisbane, Queensland prior to enlistment, Pte Costa embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Medic on 16 December 1916. Later imprisoned for various offences, his sentence was commuted and he proceeded overseas to France. Subsequently transferring to the 4th Motor Transport Company, he served the remainder of his sentence after the signing of the Armistice and returned to Australia on 18 December 1919.
