Description
Catania, Sicily, Italy. c. July 1943. Three Australian servicemen examine a bomb crater four metres deep caused by Allied shelling and bombing of the Catania airfield. Three Italian aircraft, a Fiat CR42 fighter and two Reggiane RE2005's fighters, all damaged during the battle, can be seen in the background. In the distance was Mount Etna which was obscured by smoke and haze for over a week after the bombing.
