Studio portrait of 2930 Private (Pte) William James Thomas Kelly (or Kelley), 55th Battalion. A labourer from Ironmongie via Cooma, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Kelly embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Ascanius on 25 October 1916. Later transferring to the 18th Battalion, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and awarded the Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty on 3rd October 1918 near Estrees north of St Quentin'. Following the Armistice, he developed bronchial pneumonia and, on 10 December 1918, he succumbed to his illness and was buried in the Le Cateau Communal Cemetery, France.
