Description

"The Jolly Roger." An unofficial unit flag of 2/6 Australian General Hospital (AGH) flies above the latrines. The calico flag was made from parcel wrapping by TFX8271 Private Ray Bisdee Batt (later Gabriel). Bootpolish was used to create the skull and crossbones. Later the words Gaza Ridge were added to the top of the flag. See 060836 and 060833. The flag was raised above the latrines as a signal for the Voluntary Aid Detachment servicewomen to assemble if a "furphy" or rumour was going around the camp. This image is from the collection of NX76519 Lieutenant Rita May Hind, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and Australian Army Medical Women's Service (AAMWS).
