Sommerville, John Raymond (Lieutenant, b.1890 - d.1916)
Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant John Raymond Sommerville, 27th Australian Infantry Battalion, Turkey, 1915.
Collection consists of one original handwritten letter (nine pages) written by Lieutenant Sommerville to Bill (William Sommerville) from the trenches in Gallipoli, dated 19 October 1915. The letter discusses the injury to a friend called Deano from a trench mortar, including a description of how a trench mortar works and an occurrence of one exploding nearby. Also included are details about the construction of trenches, including preparations for winter, details about Sommerville's upcoming commission, the varying attitudes of soldiers within the trenches, the large amount of rice being served, playing pranks on other soldiers, and general family affairs.
