Description

Typescript copies of letters relating to the First World War service of 28471 Bombardier William Emanuel Baker, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. These typescript copies were made by the Australian War Memorial in 1927. This file contains a series of condolence letters written to Baker's father, mother and brother John (a sergeant with the 29th Battalion at the time) following his death on 21 March 1918 in Belgium. The letters have been written by fellow members of Baker's unit (4th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade) including: 25477 Gunner Sidney Percival Swan; 2137 Sergeant Alexander Bert Chinnery; Chaplain Thomas Theodore Webb; Chaplin Michael Ignatius O'Brien. These letters express their condolences as well as the circumstances surrounding Baker's death and burial, the situation concerning his belongings, and the high regard his fellow soldiers held him in.
