Description

Informal group portrait of mounted North West Mobile Force (NORFORCE) troops as they rehearse and check procedures. Identified, left to right, is: Private (Pte) Silk; Sergeant (Sgt) Peter Leacy; Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Mal Stewart and Corporal (Cpl) B Ferguson. NORFORCE was formed in 1981 as an Infantry unit of the Australian Army Reserve. Its primary role is reconnaissance and surveillance in northern Australia. NORFORCE has an estimated 65 regular personnel and 435 reservists at any one time. Indigenous soldiers make up fifty per cent of NORFORCE's personnel, and patrol in the area they were recruited from in order to draw on their local knowledge.
