Studio portrait of 1172 Sergeant (Sgt) Wilfred John "Wif" Counsel, 4th Field Artillery Brigade (left), an unidentified sister and sergeant. A farmer of Branxholm, Tasmania, prior to enlistment, he embarked on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ceramic A40 with the 15th Battalion. He was later assigned to the 4th Machine Gun Company. Sgt Counsel was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917.
