Studio portrait of 1669 Private Henry Holdford Ward
Description
Private (Pte) Henry Holdford Ward (1669), 16th Battalion, AIF. Born in London, England, Pte Ward enlisted at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia on the 11 January 1915 and embarked from Fremantle, WA on board (A50) HMAT Itonus on 22 February 1915. He was wounded at Gallipoli and died of his wounds on 3 May 1915 on board the hospital ship Gascon. Writing in ink on the reverse reads, "Dear Miss White, Am writing you as promised. Have been in camp six weeks now and expect to embark for Egypt at any time now. Will write again. Sincerely, H H Ward." Date noted in pencil Feb 20 1915.
