Studio portrait of 3578A Private (Pte) Frederick Alfred Weiss, 53rd Battalion, of Wyalong, NSW. Pte Weiss was killed in action on 19 July 1916 at Fromelles, aged 24. His brother, 11147 Bombardier (Bdr) Erle Victor Weiss, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade, was killed in action two years later on 9 August 1918. A third brother, NX36483 Pte Harry Blanch Weiss, served with the 2/30 Battalion in the Second World War, was taken prisoner of war of the Japanese and died of illness whilst in captivity in Thailand on 30 September 1943.
