Informal portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) Harry Wright (left) and 412218 Sgt John Gordon (later Flying Officer (FO)) Gordon of Cessnock was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) after thirty operations with No. 467 Squadron, RAF. He then became a navigator with 617th (Special Duties) Squadron, RAF, known as the Dambusters. He was killed in a flying accident after returning from operations on the Antheor Viaduct, near Cannes, United Kingdom. Sgt Wright was awarded the DFC and Bar and the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). He was awarded these for a night attack on Modane in September 1943, and a consistently high standard of leadership and courage, and a large number of targets in Germany and Italy. Gordon was also awarded the DFC for skill and fortitude in operations against the enemy.
