Collection relating to CPL James Norman McPherson (VX16623), "Z" Special Unit
'Jim taken in camp'. Informal portrait of VX16623 Corporal (Cpl) James Norman (Jim) McPherson, Z Special Force. Cpl McPherson was killed in an aircraft crash when a passenger on B-24D 155 CO "The Big Ass Bird II". This aircraft of the 531st BS, 380th BG, 5th AF, USAAF, was carrying an American crew of ten and transporting six Australian members of Z Force on a mission over Babo. The aircraft did not reach its destination and was declared missing. It was not discovered until 13 January 1948. 1st Lieutenant O H Martens (pilot) was the only person identified and the remains of the passengers and other crew were initially interred in a group burial at Galala War Cemetery, Ambon, but later transferred to the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri.
