Description
Informal portrait of two soldiers at Broadmeadows Camp. On the left is probably 1277 Gunner (Gnr) Brian Lyall. A ploughman prior to enlistement, Gnr Lyall embarked with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 20 October 1914. While serving with the 6th Australian Field Artillery Battery, he died of wounds at Gallipoli on 1 December 1915. This image is from a collection of pre-embarkation photographs taken by Hilda Lyall (nee Maxwell), the wife of Brian's brother William.
