Informal portrait of William Lyall trying on a soldier's slouch hat and coat at Broadmeadows Camp. William had not yet enlisted and, along with other family members and friends, was visiting his brother, 1277 Gunner (Gnr) Brian Lyall who embarked with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade from Melbourne on 20 October 1914. Gnr Brian Lyall died of wounds at Gallipoli on 1 December 1915. 11762 Gnr William Lyall embarked with the 14th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 Janury 1916. He returned to Australia on 25 March 1919. V15860 Lance Sergeant William Lyall served with 17 Garrison Battalion in the Second World War. This image is from a collection of pre-embarkation photographs taken by William Lyall's wife Hilda Lyall (nee Maxwell).
