Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NG2484 Private John Joseph Sherry, New Guinea Volunteer Rifles. Collection consists of two original letters, dated 22/12/1941 and 15/02/1942 and 7 pages of a diary written by Private Sherry commencing in February 1942. Also included for ease of access is a modern extract detailing some biographical details of Sherry and an approximate transcription of his writings. The collection details the Japanese raid on Madang in 1942, Sherry's recruitment into the AIF, his trek from Madang along the Kokoda Trail and the time he spent in hospital with a leg injury acquired while trekking.
