Description
Studio portrait of 2368 Private Charles Leslie Wallace Anderson, 46th Battalion, of Barrabool, Victoria. A farmer prior to enlistment on 30 May 1916, Pte Anderson embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Sydney (A15) on 6 September. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, aged 20, and has no known grave. Following his death, a fellow soldier wrote to his brother, stating "I am proud to be able to tell you that Wallace was a hero. Under fire he was cool and collected and set his mates a fine example. He was wounded in the hand but refused to give in - he was shot dead while endeavouring to fetch a box of bombs to the trench....all his mates send you their sympathy in your great loss".
