Description

Studio group portrait of five members of the 4th Australian Divisional Train. Handwritten on back reads 'The Marshals on leave in Blighty'. Identified back row, left to right: Rob Walters, 3393 Driver (Dvr) Henry Ernest Peters, 3306 Private (Pte) Benjamin William Hawkshaw. Front row, left to right: 3287 Dvr John Frederick Eck and 3263 Dvr John Alfred Clare. Dvr Clare developed pleurisy in May 1918, possibly as a complication of influenza, which led to his return to Australia in August 1918. He died at Randwick NSW on 18 March 1919 and is buried at Narrandera General Cemetery.
