Informal outdoor portrait of 803 Sergeant (Sgt) George Louis Horne and 1024 Sgt Roy Couston Edmunds, both of Launceston, Tasmania. Both possessing military training prior to enlistment, the men enlisted in the 26th Battalion on 3 March 1915 and embarked for service together aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 29 June 1915. They landed at Gallipoli on 4 September 1915, serving until the evacuation. Sgt Edmunds transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion in March 1916. Soon after the battalion's arrival in France, he was admitted to hospital with cerebrospinal meningitis, and died on 5 July 1916. Sgt Horne remained with the 26th Battalion and suffered gun shot wounds to the thigh at Pozieres on 29 July 1916. He was repatriated to Australia for discharge on medical grounds in December 1917 with the rank of Company Sergeant Major.
