Group portrait of Frederick Gardiner, civilian instructor (wearing light coloured overalls), and members of an RAAF Fitter and Turner course. Frederick Gardiner was a tyre fitter and retreader when a friend and instructor, Andy Ledger, assisted him to gain employment at an RAAF school. Frederick was not a trained fitter and turner but was an enthusiastic instructor. His students gave him the nickname "the thou merchant" due to his numerous references to a "thou" or thousandth of an inch. The names of the participants are listed on the verso of photograph, however their positions are unknown: Clyde H Tasker; William H Morrison; Keith A James; Bert L Lockwood; Aubray W G Creed; Francis W Keen? (Foo); M W "Bluey" Tobin; Norman Tettro?; Roy Reynolds; McCulloch; Taarnby; Malchya?; A M Schintler and A W.
