Studio portrait of 136 Sergeant (Sgt) Angus Edward Anderson, 3rd Pioneer Battalion. A farmer from Southern Cross, Victoria prior to enlistment, Sgt Anderson embarked with the rank of Lance Corporal with A Company on HMAT Wandilla on 6 June 1916. Later promoted to Sergeant, he was wounded in action and evacuated to England. On rejoining his unit he was gassed and wounded in action for the second time. He was later awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal “For conspicuous gallantry and fine leadership during the period 16 September 1918 to 11 November 1918.” He returned to Australia on 22 September 1919.
