Beyond Gallipoli
Description
The painting consists of six totemic figures overlaying red calligraphy which overlays a temple frieze and other references to ancient cultural civilisations in Turkey. Chandler was a conceptual painter and ideas were paramount in driving the composition of his painting which was made on his return from a visit to Gallipoli and the Middle East. Since the First World War, many migrants from the Middle East have resettled in Australia, bringing with them their unique histories. Chandler addresses Gallipoli specifically and the long history of conflict in the Middle East, which Australia entered when it landed on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915.
