Photographs relating to 1858 Able Seaman William Francis Plummer, Royal Australian Navy. Born in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, on 22 October 1897, Plummer joined the Royal Australian Navy on 8 July 1912, aged 14 and 9 months. After a year of training on HMAS Tingira, his first posting was HMAS Melbourne before transferring to HMAS Encounter in June 1914. During the First World War, he remained with HMAS Encounter, serving with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) in Rabaul. He shared in the prize money (£18) gained from the seizing of the steamer ‘Zambesi’ and spent a week in December 1916 on the sloop ‘Una’ (another seized German ship, formerly the ‘Comet’). After the war, Plummer served aboard HMAS Sydney, between 1918 to 1922.
