Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 30783 Stoker Ewart Leyland 'John' Graham-Measor, HMAS Nizam, 1941-1947.

Wallet 1 of 1 - contains letters, documents and ephemera related to Graham-Measor's service in the RAN between 1941 and 1947 and his activities with navy veterans' organisations between the 1990s and 2010s.

Folder 1 of 2 - Consists of five cards, three letters, a postcard, a bank pass book, a menu, and a poem sent or collected during the period of Graham-Measor's service in the RAN between 1941 and 1947. The folder includes four Christmas cards, decorated with nautical imagery and featuring HMA Ships Australia and Cerberus and Japanese scenery, respectively, that were sent to Mr and Mrs Hanley, while the fifth card Graham-Measor received from a friend serving at HMAS Cerberus. Also included is the 1943 Christmas menu served in HMAS Australia, correspondence regarding leave arrangements from friends serving in the army, and a poem entitled "When I goes 'ome on leave' and dated 30 April 1947.

Folder 2 of 2 - Consists of five letters, three documents, and a newspaper clipping collected between the 1990s and 2010s while Graham-Measor was active in navy veterans' organisations. Several items in the folder concern an incident that occurred aboard HMAS Nizam on 11 February 1945, when in poor weather 10 ratings were washed overboard and killed. The folder includes Graham-Measor's recollections of the incident. Also in the folder is correspondence, including between Graham-Measor and author Mike Carlton, regarding the first RAN vessel to enter Tokyo Bay in 1945, and documents relating to a dispute between the HMAS Warramunga Association and the Victorian state government over the latter's policies on naval memorials.
