Description

Album of 258 photographs related to the service of NX36165 Sapper (Spr) Allan Arthur Douglas, 2/14 Field Company Engineers, in Syria in 1941. The album includes images of servicemen, camps, road building, washing a Bren gun carrier in a stream, snow and tourism. Places include Beirut, Damascus, Baalbek, Aleppo, Homs, Qoucier (Quysar?), Lebanon Ranges and Lattique. The last note by Douglas in the album reads "Farewell to Syria with regrets". A bank teller in civilian life, Spr Douglas enlisted on 20 January 1941. Following service in the Middle East, he returned to Australia in May 1942 with the rank of Acting Corporal (A/Cpl). An only son, A/Cpl Douglas visited his parents in Barraba, NSW, before serving in New Guinea. A/Cpl Douglas was killed in action on 27 November 1942, aged 32.
