Collection relating to the Second World War service of F1814 Able Seaman John Stewart Rowan, SS Pundit (HMAS Rushcutter), Royal Australian Navy, 1943.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of two press reports, dated 18 September and 26 October 1943. These messages were received by wireless and recorded by Able Seaman Stewart Rowan while he was serving on the defensively equipped merchant ship, SS Pundit. The reports give news from around the world, including the state of the war on various fronts, the movements of Allied divisions, and notable world events.

History / Summary

Able Seaman John Stewart Rowan enlisted to the Royal Australian Navy on 3 September 1940. He served on HMAS Leeuwin, Torrens, President III, and Rushcutter, and spent a significant amount of time attached to various defensively equipped merchant ships. Able Seaman received the King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct in February 1942 for good service when his ship was attacked by an enemy submarine. He was discharged on 4 February 1945.
